A phobia is an extreme abnormal fear. Sometimes there is no known conscious awareness of the cause. In our daily lives we automatically tend to divide events into two categories- possibilites and probabilites.
We are aware of the possibility of a brick falling from a building on us as we walk down a street but we don't dwell on that catastrophe as if it were a probablity. A phobia is when the possibility is in the probablity compartment of the mind. A fear of dying or a fear of flying for example.
As phobias are about fears it is necessary to learn techniques to relax as relaxation is the opposite of fear.
